January Finishes

I finished three Barn Raising squares this month. Clockwise from the top: Great Adirondack Soxie, Shibui, and Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sport(leftover from Diva's hat).

I also finished this, but it's a Ravelry link because of the whole secrecy thing.

P90XLean: Plyometrics

I love this one more and more every time I do it. It's a lot of jumping but I can feel my jumps getting higher and higher each time. I burned 513 calories.

Friday, January 30, 2009

I blocked some knitting finishes today including part of the mystery gift project. I'll post about all of it tomorrow after it dries. I can't believe it's only the end of January; this month seemed so incredibly long to me.

Oh, and I receive the Carreaux cross stitch pattern today--just as lovely in person.
P90XLean--Legs and Back, Ab Ripper

This workout has made it's reappearance in the rotation. I made it through with the same weights I used before my recovery week(15 and 20 pounds). There was much cursing and complaining on my part so I'm thinking that's how I know if I'm "bringing it"--when I want to throw something through the screen but I'm incapable of it because I have to concentrate so hard on what I'm doing.

Movie time

As I'm sitting to type this, I'm smelling some freshly baked banana bread and listening to Diva and Rage pseudo work together at Lego Star Wars. Pretty soon it's their bedtime and time for me to sit down with some knitting and watch both of the Underworld movies(I need to refresh my memory after seeing the third one last weekend).

I did not workout today but I decided to swap my rest day on Sunday for today. I've come to the conclusion that if I don't workout before dinner, it's not going to happen.

P90XLean: New Workout Day

P90X Lean--Day 31/90--Chest, Shoulders, and Triceps

New phase, new workout. Today I got up close and personal with Chest, Shoulders, and Triceps. If you can picture that the muscles in your body are arranged into "pushing" muscles and "pulling" muscles then you might be able to understand why this hour was tough. It's all "push" and no pull. You do tons of push ups, triceps extensions plus a bunch of shoulder work. I'll be feeling this one tomorrow.

Oh, and on top of that I had to do the Ab Ripper workout immediately following all that pushing. Good thing I have yoga tomorrow to loosen things up.

P90X Lean: Cardio Tuesday

Today was a cardio day. I decided to do Cathe's IMAX 2--love it--burned 507 calories. Step aerobics will always be my first love, I think. I never feel better than after a really intense hour or so of step.

Eating today--marginal. I should start posting what I eat everyday, but I won't(at least not yet).

In other news, I did a bit of cross stitch shopping today while I was waiting for the refrigerator guy--I didn't mention that our ice maker died--well it did before the truck did. The truck is fixed. The ice maker still isn't working despite assurances from the repair man that it was fixed. The ice maker has been "fixed" since 11am and now at 9pm I haven't seen a single cube. Guess who I'll be calling tomorrow.

Truckie Lives!

Well, the truck has been to the dealership and is now back in the garage. The fastest turn over from dealership X we have ever had--it must have something to do with the crappy state of car sales as in they have nothing else to do. Apparently, the "module" that translates the transmission stuff to the car's computer died. So now that it's replaced Truckie is back on the road and we're all happy.

P90X Lean: Today I started Phase 2: Core Synergistics

Because I was handicapped by one car, I did not get to workout until after dinner which is always a bad thing for me. I'm tired and my body just does not want to cooperate. So I pushed myself but I just burned out on some of the exercises. Also, as I looked at my food log I realized the only protein I had today was at dinner which may also explain my lack of energy.

Thoughts on my first month of P90X:
--I lost 3 pounds
--I lost 1.25 inches from my waist
--I lost 1.5 inches from my hips
--I don't know about other measurements as those are the only ones that really matter to me. I'm pretty sure my arms and legs are smaller too.
--I need to really work on nutrition in Phase 2. I have zero will power and even though this system is not about losing weight(it's about getting in shape); I still need to pay better attention to how I fuel my body.
--I'm proud to say that I completed every workout in Phase 1 except for the optional day 7 workouts(I don't think anyone should workout 7 days a week).

Sunday, January 25, 2009

The day was going so well.

I got my yoga workout in. I watched the NHL skills competition. I went out to dinner and a movie with some of the crew(Underworld: Rise of the Lycans--which was awesome). Then on my way home. . .

I'm not sure if it's last rites time; I'll keep you posted.

A Day Off

I'm taking today off from exercise, cleaning, and such. I'm just going to knit, read, and/or stitch.

Happy Weekend!

P90X Lean: Plyometrics

P90XLean: Plyometrics

I worked out early this morning due to other obligations during the day. I really dislike working out right after I roll out of bed but I managed to get through it in one piece and burned about 513 calories which is a little on the low side but as I said it was early.

This is by far my favorite cardio workout in the series.

Only one more workout and then I'm finished with my first recovery week and on Monday I begin Phase 2.

Thursday, January 22, 2009

I will have a bit of time on my hands this afternoon to do something. I'm torn between my secret knitting project and stitching. I want to do both; I do not have time for both. I should knit but I don't always like to do what I should do, you know? Decisions, decisions.

P90X Lean: Stretch
This is the first time I have done the Stretch DVD. It is an option every 7th day but I usually take the rest day instead. I may have to rethink that, at least occasionally, because there are some stretches in this one where I can see that I have major room for improvement.

P90X Lean: Not so Kenpo

Remember how yesterday I said I was going to get to Core Synergistics before dinner. Um yeah, that didn't happen. SO today I did Core Synergistics AND, instead of Kenpo, I did a workout from Cathe's 4 Day Split--the Double Cardio premix which rocked as always.

I was beat during my workouts today. Not just because of the length; I was just drained today but I soldiered through and I'm ready for tomorrow :)

Now I'm all caught up.

What a fantastic day!

It's a beautiful day here in Colorado and I'm pretty sure we're in the minority when compared to the rest of the country. It's almost 70 degrees and not a cloud in the sky.

And to make this day even more special--the Inauguration of our new President. Thank God. It is so refreshing to listen to a president who can speak without sounding like he just rolled off a turnip truck.

Bring on the change, Obama!!!!

P90X Lean: Core Synergistics

I have not worked out yet today. I took my usual workout time off so that I could sit and bask in the glory of the inauguration speech; I'm tearing up just thinking about it. I LOVE a good public speaker and we haven't had one since Clinton. Anyhow, I'll be working out before dinner.

Mother/Daughter SAL Weekend

I pulled out my Provence Sampler to work on while I was teaching Diva. I figured it was simple and I wouldn't get angry if she interrupted me(unlike with a HAED piece where I tend to get cranky if anyone bothers me while I'm working).

Before(clickable thumbnail):
Provence Sampler 25June08

After(sorry it's so blurry, it's the best from what I took):

Diva's Progress:

Not too bad for her first ever foray into cross stitch :)
And she chose metallic thread. Any of you who have ever stitched with it know what a nightmare it is. It doesn't stay on the needle very well and it doesn't really lay nice without a lot of work but she seems okay with it. Cotton floss will be a piece of cake for her after this.

P90XLean Day 22: Yoga Recovery Week #1

Yoga was tough today. My balance was off. I don't know if it was because I was tired or what? I still plowed through though.

Sunday, January 18, 2009

I'm all choked up.

I don't know if it's just me but I want my kiddos to have a crafty hobby. I have been pushing knitting on Diva since she turned 6. She can do the knit stitch but the addiction to knitting didn't take. . .sigh. Her theory is 'why should I learn how to knit, when you knit for me?'

But earlier last week, out of the blue, she asked me if I would teach her how to cross stitch. Not only that but she wants to design her own piece. Let me repeat that SHE.WANTS.TO.DESIGN.HER.OWN.PIECE. My thoughts went to the samplers little girls had to stitch back in old timey times. I could not be more proud. Oh, and she wants us to set aside a couple hours each week to stitch together! I love my little Diva :)

So yesterday we made the trek to JoAnns for her supplies for her first piece which will also be an original piece(can you tell I'm super proud/impressed by that). I have been cross stitching since I was 12 and I have never made up my own piece. Diva is completely unfazed by the prospect. I am so proud of her creative spirit that I could just weep, seriously.

I'll keep you all updated. I may even let her post a couple of times about her WIP.

P90XLean: Rest Day.

Tomorrow I begin my first recovery week. Still working out a lot just no weights next week.

P90X Lean: Alternate Cardio

P90X Lean: supposed to be Kenpo, but not

Cathe's Low Max today because as I've said before Kenpo and Cardio X are too lame for me. I am so looking forward to my rest day tomorrow and really looking forward to starting the recovery week next week.

I do not have a lot to say today. I'm tired, cranky, and can't figure out what to cook for dinner. Plus I'm staring a mountain of laundry in the face, along with a pile of dirty dishes in the sink, and just general house disarray. Ugh!

P90X Lean: Legs and Back

P90X Lean: Legs and Back

I got my new resistance bands yesterday--just in time to put them to work today. They worked like a charm. Today was my last weight workout for a week as my recovery week starts on Monday. I'm looking forward to Phase 2.

Thoughts on the nutrition plan:

I started the first week with the Phase 1 Level 1 plan and I went a little "carb crazy" at the end of the week. The plan only allows for one serving of carbs per day and that is just no enough for me as I quickly found out. And the protein, good Lord, I cannot eat that much protein a day. So the second week I went to the Phase 2 plan. It's been a rocky couple of weeks but I will admit that I feel better when I follow the plan exactly(which I haven't done with enough regularity and I intend to remedy that as I finish Phase 1 and start Phase 2 of the workout program). I do occasionally add in an extra snack if I'm starving.

P90XLean: Yoga Thursdays

Yoga day today.

I'm noticing improvements in my strength and flexibility the more I do this workout. I think the only sticking points right now are steadiness in some of the balance postures and any poses where you have to turn into your body instead of away from it. My spine does not seem to want to move that way, but I'm working on it. Yoga blocks have been helping.

Wii Fit or should I say Mii Fit

We got a Wii for Christmas. I could say that it was just for Diva and Rage but that would be a lie because Mr. KiP and I like it too.

Our neighbors have a Wii Fit. We could not find one before Christmas but, God Bless my neighbor, she found one for us right after Christmas.

Now, here's the thing with the Wii Fit. Your little Mii plumps up like a softball(or at least mine does) EVERY time you take a body test. Now if that isn't motivation to lose weight I don't know what is. You should witness the laughing and hilarity Diva and Rage have at my and Mr. KiP's expense. Rage just keeps yelling over and over, "You two are so chubby." Then laughs himself off the couch and onto the floor.

So a NEW Challenge for the Year:

***Get my Mii to look more like I think it should(which is not like a softball with skinny arms and legs)***

P90XLean--Day 17: Shoulders and Arms, Ab Ripper

Seems like I'm getting stronger every time I workout. I pushed hard today using 10, 12, 15, and 20 pound dumbbells. Ab Ripper was actually bearable today.

A Sneaky Peek

At the Mystery WiP:

It's Cascade 220/size 5 dpns and that's all I'm saying about it right now(because the recipient has been known to stop here once in a while). :)

P90XLean--Day 16: Plyometrics

This is the only cardio workout in this series that I like and I don't just like it I.LOVE.IT!! It's hard but in a good way. You bust your A$$ in this one.

I burned 543 calories today during that hour.

Monday, January 12, 2009

P90XLean: Core Synergistics

Week 3 began today.

I did not lose any weight last week but I feel like my hips are a bit narrow(judging by how clothing feels).

I did not get to workout until after dinner today. Shoveling and extended commute times(getting the kiddos to and from school)got in the way of an earlier workout.

Core Synergistics. Still a good workout. I pushed harder than I have with weights and full body push ups, which by the way are getting much better and I can do them much longer. All in all, I'm comfortably uncomfortable and ready to go to sleep.

Sunday, January 11, 2009

the love of my life, my best friend, my husband turns

THE BIG 4-0!!!!

Happy Birthday old man--I can say this because I don't turn 40 until next month--I get 5 weeks of busting on him before the tables turn ;)

P90XLean: Kenpo

I have decided that Kenpo and Cardio X are very lame cardio workouts SO today I subbed in Cathe's IMAX 3. I took this opportunity to give my new heart monitor a try and I burned 594 calories in my 59 minute workout--not too shabby.

Guess Who I Spent Today With?

The Pittsburgh Penguins, that's who!

I got to see my boys play the Avs today and our seats were SWEET!

P90X Lean: Day 12?--Rest day

I'm swapping my rest day from tomorrow to today.

Friday, January 09, 2009

P90X Lean: Legs and Back

Day 12: Legs and Back, Ab Ripper

I switched the order on these today and did Ab Ripper first--that went much better I was able to push much harder through the Ab Ripper DVD and it didn't affect my performance in Legs and Back.

I upped weights on everything this time and since I am using the bands instead of a pull up bar, I held each rep at the bottom and concentrated on a slower negative--that felt much better. I have ordered higher tension bands--I was hoping they would be here today but no such luck--the highest tension I have right now is equal to about 30 pounds and I can do much heavier.

P90X Lean: Yoga Thursdays

Day 11:

Today was a yoga day. I'm already noticing small improvements in my flexibility especially with some of the twisting poses. I never would have guessed that yoga was such a tough workout. It takes a little while to get going but once you are done; you're sweating.

My eating is slipping a bit this week. I need to get back on track tomorrow.

Me Thinks. . .

. . .it's time for a little shopping.

One of my favorite cross stitch designers has FINALLY released the aforementioned Cirque de Carreaux and one or two other things may creep into the cart. I'm not saying what but there are numerous things on this page and this page that really appeal to me.

Now if something there doesn't inspire you to want to play with color AND take up cross stitch, then I can't help you ;)

Day 10(or whatever day I'm on now--they're all starting to blur)P90XLean: Shoulders and Arms, Ab Ripper

I pushed harder with weights this time; I will see how hard tomorrow morning. I am having a little trouble maintaining energy through the first workout while maintaining enough to finish the second(ab ripper is a separate 15+ minute core routine). I have read that some people split these days up and do one of the two workouts later in the day--I think I may be heading that way because my arms were so fried today that balancing for the some of the ab stuff was difficult.

Super Secret Knitting

I am in the process of working on some gifty knitting, so I can't put up pics of it yet but I will as soon as I'm finished and the recipient gets it :)

Tonight I plan on planting my behind in front of the TV and knitting while I watch the beginning of the new round of The Biggest Loser.

P90XLean: Day 9: Plyometrics

Today, on the recommendation of my sister, I did Plyometrics instead of Cardio X. Much, much better and by that I mean harder. That is the kind of difficulty I'm talking about when it comes to a cardio workout. Lots of jumping, lots of feeling it in my legs, and lots and lots of sweating :) I love finishing a workout and wanting to collapse on the floor, crazy huh?

Sheepy Goodness

I have a sheep collection. It started out small but it seems to grow. Around Christmas time I added a few more items to my "flock".

Notice the very cool "black sheep" blanket--NICE! They are all from Bath and Body Works if you're curious.

I have visions of someday having a crafty/book room all to myself where I can be surrounded by books, yarn, stitching supplies and finished pieces, and my sheep :)

P90XLean--Day 8: Core Synergistics
I made it through week one. I'm two pounds lighter and sore but I'm enjoying the challenge. Since I am getting more familiar with the program, I pushed myself harder this week. I added weight and reps where I could--trying to improve a little on my performance last week.

Getting Back in Order

I spent all day today putting away the Christmas decorations. The only thing left up is the tree itself and I need DH's help to get that undone. It's always sad taking down the Christmas tree but at the same time I'm amazed at how much space it takes up.

Diva and Rage head back to school tomorrow. They have actually been pretty well behaved this break but I think that has more to do with the fact that they got a Wii for Christmas--that thing is awesome! As someone who grew up playing Atari, I'm always stunned at how cool video games are now.

If you're heading back to work tomorrow, don't work too hard :)

P90XLean: rest day. I had the option of rest or a DVD called Stretch X. I just ran out of time and desire to workout today.

Saturday, January 03, 2009

First Finish of 2009

While watching "Eagle Eye" with DH last night, I finished Rage's road cone orange hat and believe it or not DH wants one in the same color.

Yarn: Cascade 220 Heathers
Needles: size 8, addis and dpns
Pattern: Knitters Handy Book of Patterns

P90XLean--Day 6: Kenpo
So, I have to say, I am not at all impressed with the "cardio" workouts in this series. I think I'm definitely going to start subbing my Cathe cardio DVDs on cardio days. I worked up a little bit of a sweat but it was so stop/start it was not really worth the hour I put in on it. I think these cardios might be good for days when you want to add another cardio later in the day.

P90XLean--Catching Up

I'm just catching up on my thoughts on my first few days of P90X Lean(before the New Year). It will probably make no sense to someone who isn't doing it so I won't be offended if you don't read these. I'll post in the title when it's a P90X post so you don't have to read--unless, of course, you enjoy reading about me torturing myself ;)

Day 1--Core Synergistics
Initial thoughts:
**I'm a wuss when it comes to push ups. I can do tons of "girly" ones but very few "full body". I'm hoping by the end of 90 days that will change significantly.
**I only skipped one section in this workout. It was in the BONUS section and it was the Plank to Chaturanga ISOs--I was just too winded and I knew if I tried to hold a Chaturanga at that point in the workout it would most likely end up in a face plant.
**Dreya Rolls--good Lord those are soooooo hard for me. I don't know if I'm doing them wrong or what but they are hard. I did 10 with my form getting more and more "iffy" by the end.
**I don't feel like I "dogged it" too much. I did not push as hard as I could have because I was trying to concentrate on form.

Day 2: Cardio
**I'm sore from yesterday. I expect that will be a common comment for me.
**Cardio X is short and *gasp* lame compared to my Cathe DVDs, so I may sub in on Cardio X days.
**Dreya Rolls reared their head in this one too and I still can't do them well or with proper form.

Day 3: Shoulders and Arms, Ab Ripper X
**I only used 5, 8, and 10 pounds for this workout. At times it felt light but I was thinking more about form and making sure I could get through the hour.
**This one sneaks up on you when you're done--you really feel spent.
**Ab Ripper--whew! It's tough on its own(I tried it before I started the program) but it goes to a whole new level when you've just completed a workout prior to it.

Day 4: Yoga
Imagine, if you will, what a Barbie doll must feel like if you twist off her legs. If you can imagine that, then you will have some idea how my legs felt after this workout. Scary thing about that. . .I liked it!

Day 5: Legs and Back, Ab Ripper
As I am still in my first week, I went with lower weight than normal on the weighted exercises. It was interesting because I actually felt the leg work more when I was done. Now the back work. . .I don't have a pull up bar(nor do I have appropriate doorways for a door model, so I am using bands. I definitely need to look into higher tension bands because the back work seemed a little bit too easy(although my back will tell me more tomorrow--when I wake up in pain).

Challenges 2009

I don't seem to do well with resolutions, or long term goals, so I decided that rather than list a bunch of things now that I want to accomplish throughout this year, I would rather set up mini-challenges for myself throughout the year. I will probably set my challenges at the beginning of each month(depending on their duration).

There are a couple I'm starting on immediately:

(1) I'm challenging myself to have 3 months of the year where I post everyday.

Starting with this month--I tried last month and I posted 23 out of 31 days which is unheard of for me, so with a little extra push this month I think I can make all 31 :)

And this month's theme is Change which I felt was particularly apropos for me.

(2) The other challenge I'm presenting myself with is to finish a rotation of P90X Lean.

I'm actually in my first week right now(because I started on the 29th of December). And since I need to make myself super accountable on this one it will probably be a topic, or at least mentioned, in every post this month. I somehow have the feeling that most of my comments on this will involve pain--I just keep chanting to myself, No Pain, No Gain ;)

What goals/challenges/etc. are you setting for yourself? Care to join me in Challenges 2009?
